2000 Candidate Evaluations

About Candidate Evaluations

The Municipal League has been rating candidates for public office since 1911 based on four criteria: Knowledge of issues, Character, Effectiveness and Involvement in the community. The League ratings are widely respected and provide the only independent non-partisan, non-agenda driven evaluation of candidates.

This Year's Results!

This year,  three citizen committees (East King, South King, and North/Central) have evaluated candidates for the Washington State Legislature from King County districts.  Candidate interviews and ratings were completed during August and ratings are now available to help voters make the very best choice in the primary and general elections.

What about other candidates?

This year, the League only rated candidates for state legislature from King County districts.  Various bar associations (lawyers groups) have produced similar ratings for judicial candidates (judges), and washingtonvoter.org has links on a variety of candidates and issues.

The League urges voters to use other sources of election information in addition to the candidate evaluation report before going to the polls.

Primary Election: Tuesday, September 19
General Election: Tuesday, November 7

Acknowledgements

The Municipal League staff and Board of Trustees would like to thank everyone who worked on Candidate Evaluation this year. Putnam Barber chaired the 2000 Candidate Evaluation Steering Committee, assisted by committee chairs Pat Bowman (East), Lonnie Lusardo (North/West), and Phil Olbrechts (South), as well as by steering committee members George Scott and Mark Troxel. We also thank TVW for filming our Process and Issues Trainings.

Our appreciation to our Issues Training Speakers who educated our evaluators on issues of particular interest this legislative session: Dr. Bette Hyde, State Secretary of Transportation Sid Morrison, Rep. Brian Thomas, Pat Steele and Gary Prince.

The civic-minded organizations which provided meeting space for our committees were as follows: Seattle University, the Lake Washington School District, the City of Des Moines and the Mercer Island Community Center.

Our energetic and talented interns - Christal Wood, Reid Saaris, and particularly Donna Brown - kept the committee process running smoothly.

The Municipal League of King County is a grassroots, good-government, organization operated almost entirely by concerned citizen volunteers. Each of the committee members listed on this page has given time and effort to the cause of good government.

Finally, two people deserve special recognition for their outstanding contributions to this year’s Candidate Evaluation program - 2000 CEC Program Coordinator Jennie Keith and volunteer webmaster David Bangs, whose hard work, dedication and attention to detail helped make this a successful effort.

-Tom Page, Municipal League Director
-Tom Albro, Municipal League Chair
