In this section, we are seeking responses that reflect the four ratings criteria: involvement, effectiveness, character, and knowledge. These are defined as follows:
1. In a page or less, why are you running for this office? (Note: the interview committee will be given a copy of this statement before your interview; at the beginning of your interview you will have the opportunity to expand on this statement in any way you wish.)
|
I’m running because I want to make this State and the 47th District a better place to live, work, and raise our families. Our State and district have so much potential, we are truly surrounded by opportunity. But we have to make the most of this opportunity, we have to do better then we are right now. And we can do it.
We can make this a better place to live by bringing balance to land use and environmental issues. Allowing reasonable people to do reasonable things to help protect and improve their property, while funding the State Park system and conserving the natural resources that make Washington unique. We also need to insure that property tax increases are kept under control so people can afford to stay in their homes and achieve the American dream they work so hard for.
We can make this a better place to work by bringing accountability and transparence back to Olympia. We need to have policies that support small business not over regulates to the point that they can’t function. The key to having continued growth and prosperity is implementing real fixes for our States transportation issues. I see transportation as a pivotal issue; it affects both our regional economy and the quality of life of our families. Lastly, we make our district a better place to raise a family by keeping transportation time down so families can spend time together. By supporting teachers and a rigorous education policy so our children are competitive in the global economy, and by removing the predators and meth labs from our streets.
These are the reasons I am running, to make the District and the State a better place to live, work, and raise our families. |
2. Describe your most important personal characteristics or traits as they relate to the office you seek.
|
My most important trait as it relates to the position I am seeking is leadership. My leadership experience extends from the National level to the local level and spans over 15 years of proven success. As an Army Officer, I have commanded Airborne, Ranger, and Special Forces units, operating in the most difficult environments in the world. I have helped to formulate and implement drug interdiction policy in the Caribbean, working with the US diplomatic corps, the DEA, and local Caribbean law enforcement. I have led missions to teach peace-keeping operations and democracy to former Soviet satellites. Most recently, I led a Special Forces Team forward of friendly lines in the first few weeks of Operation Iraqi Freedom. I was responsible for coordinating all Special Operations from the Kuwait boarder to the Karbala Gap, south of Baghdad. The experience of working with foreign armies and governments has taught me the skill of rapport building, of over-coming differences to find common ground for the common good. I have also demonstrated leadership in my community. As an assistant professor at Seattle University I teach management and leadership to the future leaders of the country. While working at the University, I noticed a need in the community to bridge educational and cultural differences and created a program that has provided over 2800 hours of reading and math tutoring to low income, at risk children since it began four years ago. Lastly, seeing a need for quality summer programs for the children living in the Kent section eight housing, I have led a program to bring high school and college basketball coaches to the housing development to teach a summer basketball camp. This is the first project of its type to bring high quality coaching and mentoring to the children in this development. In recognition of my leadership development skill, I have been asked to develop and teach a comprehensive leadership program for Seattle University beginning this fall. I believe our State desperately needs quality, non-partisan leadership. The last 15 years of my life have been dedicated to that kind of leadership with tremendous success. I will use those leadership skills to stop partisan infighting and solve problems that benefit all Washingtonians now and for our future. |
3. Please describe in sufficient detail, one to three accomplishments or contributions of which you are most proud. These examples should illustrate effective skills and capabilities you think apply to the office you are seeking. These accomplishments may have occurred at any time in your personal, professional, or public life.
|
1. The establishment of a summer basketball camp for children of low income families in Kent. This project shows that, with leadership and vision, the community can work together to make things better. Seeing the need for a community based solution to the lack of summer programs for lower income children living in Section Eight housing in Kent, I built a partnership between local organizations, businesses, and college and high school coaches to help solve the problem. This project displayed the solution based problem solving that is needed in Olympia. Skills displayed: Problem analysis, stakeholder consensus building, community knowledge, determination, leadership, fiscal restraint. 2. Seeing the need to improve the math and reading skills and bridge cultural differences in the local community, I started a tutoring program that brought Seattle University students into the classrooms at a local elementary school. The program was unique because it focused not only on the educational development of the children, but also on the leadership development and cross-cultural communication development of the tutor. The program made maximum use of the student-to-tutor contact by developing each in meaningful ways. This program was used as a model to develop the University's leadership program. Skills displayed: Problem analysis, multi-level solution development, cross-cultural communication, leadership, fiscal restrain. 3. During the first days of the Iraq war I was responsible for the coordination and planning of Special Operations in a vast area from the Kuwait boarder to the south of Baghdad. Besides coordinating the actions of dispersed elements, I also directly commanded the actions of my Special Forces Team. During those first few days I regularly interacted with Iraqi civilians and local leaders to begin to set the conditions needed to bring stability back to the region. My actions and the actions of my teams insured the safety of Iraqi civilians and US forces, while assisting coalition forces to successfully compete their missions. Skills displayed: Physical and moral courage, organization skills, communication skills, compassion, problem solving, leadership. |
4. Please list or describe your current and past activities in the community in which you have acquired skills that relate to the office you seek. Include your role in the activity and the year(s) in which you were involved. Involvement consists of many areas such as family, neighborhood, community, employment, or public life.

1. As part of my continuing education I am completing a Master’s Degree in Public Administration. Because of my success in the MPA program I was asked to become a student member of the Board of Directors of the Western Washington Chapter of the American Society of Public Administration (ASPA). After serving a year as a student member I was asked to run for a position as a full Board member. Since this time I have been elected by the association membership twice to sit on the Board of Directors. This position has allowed me to develop my knowledge and skill in public administration at all levels. I have served as a Board member for since 2001.
2. (2005-2006) The establishment of a summer basketball camp for children of low income families in Kent. This project shows that, with leadership and vision, the community can work together to make things better. This project displayed the solution based problem solving that is needed in Olympia. Skills displayed: Problem analysis, stakeholder consensus building, community knowledge, determination, leadership, fiscal restraint.
3. (2000 to present) Seeing the need to improve the math and reading skills and bridge cultural differences in the local community, I started a tutoring program that brought Seattle University students into the classrooms at a local elementary school.

As a civic leader in my community and the nation I have had the opportunity to lead many community events that have helped make our district a better place to live. Earlier this year I recognized a community need to help provide quality summer programs for low income families. I worked to establish a summer basketball camp for children of low income families in Kent.
In 2000 I saw a need to improve the math and reading skills and bridge cultural differences in the local community, I started a tutoring program that brought Seattle University students into the classrooms at a local elementary school. Lastly, I am an active member of the Covington Rotary and have participated in road-side clean-up, fund raisers to support college scholarships and many other civic activities. I believe one person can make a difference and has the responsibility to do so.
