2006 CANDIDATE BACKGROUND QUESTIONNAIRE
FOR NON-JUDICIAL CANDIDATES

The Municipal League of King County requests every candidate who participates in the candidate evaluation process to submit background information prior to his/her interview with a candidate evaluation committee.  The questionnaire is the basis of the League’s research and interview process.  The League’s ratings are non-partisan; they are based on standards of Involvement, Effectiveness, Character, and Knowledge, all of which have been developed and refined over the past 90 years.

A printed version of the questionnaire is available for candidates who prefer to use the traditional format.  To obtain a hard copy, please contact the League office.  A copy of this questionnaire will be provided to Candidate Evaluation Committee members to help them prepare for your interview.  Candidate responses, except the confidential section, will be available to the general public at the League website.

 SECTION III

In this section, we are seeking responses that reflect the four ratings criteria: involvement, effectiveness, character, and knowledge.  These are defined as follows:

1.      In a page or less, why are you running for this office?  (Note: the interview committee will be given a copy of this statement before your interview; at the beginning of your interview you will have the opportunity to expand on this statement in any way you wish.)

Believing that voters should be given a choice of at least two candidates in the General Election, I stepped forward to provide that choice.  In addition, there are several votes that my opponent made that I would have voted differently.  I do believe my opponent should be held accountable for his voting record.  Having attended regularly school board meetings for the past four years, I have been dismayed by the lack of leadership in solving school funding issues and the lack of support for the downtown business plan for the City of Federal Way.

2.      Describe your most important personal characteristics or traits as they relate to the office you seek.

Among the important characteristics that relate to the office are my broad background and knowledge of political processes, since I have participated in annual Citizen Lobby Days, such as those of the American Association of University Women.  I am an issues oriented person and firmly believe that decisions of government should be made based on research and examining how other states have handled similar challenges.  I enjoy obtaining many points of view before developing my own views about an issue.  Being firmly committed to making decisions that are best practices, I believe in public policy making that achieves the greatest good for the greatest number.  The decisions in Olympia effect not only this generation, but also the future generations to come.

3.      Please describe in sufficient detail, one to three accomplishments or contributions of which you are most proud.  These examples should illustrate effective skills and capabilities you think apply to the office you are seeking.  These accomplishments may have occurred at any time in your personal, professional, or public life.

(1) While a District Manager for King County Parks, I was able to contribute to ensuring safety guards were installed over the back windows of the pick-up trucks to ensure the safety of the employees.

(2) While I was a District Manager for King County Parks, I was instrumental in ending the practice of hiring relatives of current employees, which prevented the Parks Department from realizing its Affirmative Action goals in regards to hiring women and minorities.

(3) While a District Managera for King County Parks, I was able to convince the Parks Director to invest in tailgate lifts, which reduced the number of hernias and back injuries, as employees lifted equipment in and out of the pick-up trucks several times a day.

4.      Please list or describe your current and past activities in the community in which you have acquired skills that relate to the office you seek.  Include your role in the activity and the year(s) in which you were involved.  Involvement consists of many areas such as family, neighborhood, community, employment, or public life.

(1) Being a concerned citizen who regularly attends school board meetings.  Role:  Writing a column in the 30th District Democratic Newsletter describing developments on the school board.  Also writing letters to the editor about actions of the school board.

(2) Being active in the 30th District Democratic Party.  Role:  Volunteering for qualified candidates and staffing the annual booth at Federal Way Festival Days.

(3) Reading the newspaper on a regular basis to keep informed of current affairs.  Role:  Send significant developments of legislation in both Olympia and D.C. to my email list.

  1. Please describe the duties of the office you seek.  Which are the most important duties and why?

(1) Listening to issues that effect members of the district that have regional and statewide implications from transportation to building needed infrastructure improvements that better served the residents and protect the environment.

(2) Being responsive to new issues that arise.

(3) Ensuring a balanced budget that meets the needs of the State of Washington.

(4) Protecting our the vulnerable populations in our state.

(5) Providing medical and dental care for the poor children of our state, so that they reach adulthood with the best opportunity to realize their potential.

(6) Providing the foundations for a diversified economy that provides liveable wage jobs.
