50th Annual Civic Awards - 2009

The Municipal League honored eight individuals and three organizations at its 50th Annual Civic Awards on March 25, 2009. The awards were given for outstanding contributions to the community and work toward better government. The event was sold out  and well attended by elected and public officials, community leaders and supporters of good government!

In honor of the golden anniversary of the awards, the League also recognized past winners, many of whom were in attendance.

The ceremony was held at the Seattle Art Museum and Thomas Goldstein was Master of Ceremonies.

The 50th Annual Civic Awards winners:

• Cary Moon (People's Waterfront Coalition) - Citizen of the Year
  Award presented by: Denis Hayes, Bullitt Foundation
• Ava Frisinger (Mayor, City of Issaquah) - Public Official of the Year
  Award presented by: Fred Butler, Issaquah City Council
• Allen Church (Fire Chief/Administrator, South King Fire & Rescue) -
  Public Employee of the Year
  Award presented by: William "Bill" Gates
• Force 10 Hoops LLC (Owner of the Seattle Storm) - Business of the Year
  Award presented by: Vickie Wallen
• Seattle Works - Organization of the Year
  Award presented by: Dan Evans Jr.
• Joni Earl (CEO, Sound Transit) and Mayor Greg Nickels (Chair, Sound Transit Board of Directors) - James R. Ellis Regional Leadership
  Award presented by: REI CEO Sally Jewell and former Mayor Norm Rice
• Brice Maryman (Open Space Seattle 2100) - Doug Mason Memorial
  (Honors a leader under the age of 35)
  Award presented by: Michael McGinn, Seattle Great City Initiative
• The Evans School of Public Affairs - Warren G. Magnuson Memorial Award
  Award presented by: Colleen Willoughby, Washington Women's Foundation
• Bruce D. Carter and Norma Jean Hanson - Mary Skelton Volunteer Award
  Award presented by: Robert Klein and Lauren Kuester
  

The awardees were nominated by the public, evaluated by the League’s Civic Awards Committee and approved by the League board. Additionally, a local high school student will be named as a Civic Scholar and will receive a partial college scholarship.
