RE: Puget Sound Transportation Reform Package; ESHB 2871

Dear Governor Gregoire, Senator Haugen and Representative Murray,

We applaud your skillful and determined leadership in guiding the bill to passage in
both houses. Regional transportation reform has been stalled for years. The bill is a
major breakthrough in regional transportation reform.

Because of your commitment to achieving a reasoned compromise, we now have a
practical framework for developing new approaches to regional transportation.
This framework allows for improving our regional transportation planning process, for
expanding our transit system and for fixing our aging highways and bridges. The
region can now prioritize projects and promote a strategy for funding that will follow
adopted regional and local growth management plans and policies.

The Municipal League of King County, particularly our Transportation Committee,
will be engaged in the new regional governance and funding proposals over the next
year. We look forward to working with you and the appointed members of the new
Regional Transportation Commission. The League is eager to participate in the
effort to establish an integrated regional transportation network.

We will be watching and commenting during the development and production of the
2006 city of Seattle ballot and the 2007 regional ballot.

Sincerely,
Rita Brogan, Chair         Bob Klein, Chair,
Board of Directors         Transportation Committee
