We are pleased to welcome our newest board member, Mark Melroy, to the Muncipal League Board!
Mark currently serves as the Chief Financial Officer for the Washington State Attorney General’s Office. In this role, Mark manages all budgetary and financial operations of the office, which has an annual operating budget in excess of $125M, a staff that includes 550 attorneys, and 27 separate legal divisions providing legal services to roughly 200 state agencies, boards and commissions.
Prior to joining the Attorney General’s Office, Mark worked for the King County Council where he managed the adoption of the county’s $5 billion budget. Melroy led the council’s financial and budget deliberations for three years while the county faced a $145 million (24 percent) reduction to its general fund budget. Melroy helped preserve vital functions of the county’s criminal justice system while maintaining the general obligation bond ratings at the highest possible level, AAA in most cases. Before leaving the Council, Mark worked as lead staff to the Government Oversight and Accountability Committee for our 2015 Municipal League Public Official of the year, King County Councilmember Pete von Reichbauer.
Mark began his professional career as a civil engineer in public works infrastructure management, including seven years in a variety of roles with the King County Department of Transportation. Mark retains his status as a registered professional engineer in Washington State, and holds a graduate degree from the University of Washington Evans School of Public Affairs.
Mark originally hails from Davenport, Iowa but has called Seattle and the Puget Sound area home for nearly 20 years. He currently resides in a house that he built, and continues to finish because apparently it never ends, in the Madrona neighborhood. Mark has followed the work of the King County Municipal League for some time now with great interest – he strongly believes in our mission to promote good government that is open, effective and accountable, and he is very excited to put his experience and passion for good public policy to work for us.
